It is no exaggeration to say that Charles Buchan was a legend in British football during the 20th century. His seventeen year playing career, interrupted by the First World War, began with Woolwich Arsenal in 1909, but he made his name playing for Sunderland before returning to Highbury in 1925 to complete a fascinating soccer odyssey.
The following twenty years saw him travel the world writing about the sport he loved before, along with several pals, he created a new magazine called Charles Buchan's Football Monthly in 1951. This was a publication with an emphasis on quality writing which satisfied a growing demand that the game be better represented.
Buchan always had a lively and interesting take on the game and was not one for living in the past as he regularly challenged the authorities to modernise, particularly with regard to the national team.
This book brings together a range of articles written by Buchan and published in the magazine during the early 1950's, which not only cover his life story, but also give a fascinating glimpse into the history of the game. This publication is also lavishly-illustrated with some fantastically restored photographs, many not seen for years, which will transport the reader back to a forgotten era of the beautiful game. This book published in 2026.
